Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency

Pancreatic Exocrine Insufficiency (PEI) is a condition that causes problems in how you digest food. Your pancreas doesn't make enough of the enzymes that your body needs to break down and absorb nutrients. Enzymes speed up chemical reactions in the body.

Symptoms include:

  • Diarrhoea and, foul smelling, loose stools

  • Stools that float and are greasy/fatty

  • Flatulence

  • Bloating

  • Stomach discomfort and cramps

PEI may result in malabsorption of nutrients and thus result in deficiencies and deficiency-related disorders such as osteoporosis, poor skin and immune health, and vision to name just a few.

How does Surrey Centre for Nutrition work with SIBO?

The aim of working with a client with PEI is most often to address the enzyme insufficiency with replacement enzyme supplements and also ensure dietary and lifestyle modifications that positively impact PEI symptoms are adhered to, whilst we work on identifying and addressing the underlying causative factors for the development of PEI. Pancreatic enzyme insufficiency often is secondary to another disease state or imbalance. We often identify PEI to be associated with other conditions such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and as such we work to identify the triggers of the inflammation and target these with dietary, lifestyle and supplemental support. PEI is also often identified as resulting from conditions such as blood sugar imbalance, and gastrointestinal conditions such as SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). At the SCfN we work with a true root cause functional medicine approach to all conditions including PEI, and as such our aim is to get to the crux of what has led to the development of PEI for each individual client. We will also support you back to a point of nutritional sufficiency to address any nutritional deficiencies or insufficiencies that may have resulted due to your PEI.
