SIBO

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine — particularly types of bacteria not commonly found in that part of the digestive tract. This condition is sometimes called blind loop syndrome.

What are the symptoms?

Signs and symptoms of SIBO often include:

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal pain

  • Nausea

  • Bloating

  • An uncomfortable feeling of fullness after eating

  • Diarrhea

  • Unintentional weight loss

  • Malnutrition

How does Surrey Centre for Nutrition work with SIBO?

The identification of SIBO often required functional testing to determine the type and level of bacterial overgrowth present. Once we have identified the presence and type of SIBO (methane-producing or hydrogen-producing) we can get to work on addressing this overgrowth. A typical SIBO protocol will involve the reduction of what is known as high FODMAP foods, followed by the implementation of a dietary. Lifestyle and supplement plan that directly targets the overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine, whilst promoting healthy motility, supports digestive enzyme function and supports detoxification. After a prescribed period of time, we can transition our focus from one of bacterial eradication to one of support for gastrointestinal lining integrity and rebalancing nutrient sufficiency and targeting any nutrient deficiencies or insufficiencies that may have resulted from the SIBO.

An important part of the process is to move a client back onto a less restrictive diet where higher FODMAP foods are well tolerated and a phase of reintroduction is where this occurs. We work together with our clients to introduce foods at a suitable pace and allow for the identification of any food which may not be well tolerated. The aim is for a client to be able to move forward in life with a diet that is as varied as possible to ensure optimal overall health.
