Thrush

Thrush is a yeast infection caused by the Candida species of fungus, usually Candida albicans. It usually lives harmlessly in the vagina and does not cause any symptoms, because its growth is kept under control by normal bacteria.

How does Surrey Centre for Nutrition work with Thrush?

Although thrush is seen as a locliased yeast infection, and in some cases it is localised, in those who suffer with chronic or frequent bouts of thrush we have to consider the health of the gut and the immune system in mediating this infection and allowing it to take a hold.

We often find that when vaginal thrush is a specific problem for a client, that when we examine the gut with comprehensive stool testing or organic acid testing, what we identify is the same yeast (candida) that causes thrush is present in the digestive system too. Oftentimes there are multiple other gastrointestinal imbalances that we identify alongside candida in a client with chronic or recurrent thrush.

The immune system is also implicated in allowing the growth of candida in someone who is suffering from chronic thrush and so a focussed approach targeting immune regulation and gastrointestinal function (intrinsically linked) is essential in bringing a client suffering from chronic candida back to a point of health. Protocols will look to support immune and gut health through both dietary and lifestyle support. An integrative approach is essential to balancing the immune system and the health of the gut.
